Toronto | Traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat – With less than a month before potential U.S. tariffs take effect, a group of prominent Ontarians released the Trillium Declaration. It outlines eight actions the province can take to help Ontarians weather the impacts of potential U.S. tariffs.
“The White House tariff threat has most Canadians rightly focusing on how governments should use Canadian tariffs to respond to U.S. tariffs. But we also need to plan for what the province can do to directly help Ontarians,” said David Crombie, former federal Cabinet Minister in the Brian Mulroney Government and one of the Trillium Declaration advisors. “Now is the time to get our own house in order and discuss the provincial policies we need for Ontarians to weather potential tariffs.”
“Yes, we’re in the middle of an election,” said Anne Golden, former head of the Conference Board of Canada. “But we need to think about what happens after February 27th. The Trillium Declaration is a ‘to do’ list for the new Legislature. The actions in it will protect and strengthen what makes us Canadian. Regardless of who wins the election, we need every MPP supporting the Trillium Declaration.”
The Trillium Declaration includes actions to:
“We’re calling on Ontarians and every party leader to sign the Trillium Declaration,” said Crombie. “We need everyone working together to prepare us for whatever the White House throws our way.”
